Over 250 People Gathered to Experience the Future of Hotel Development

A crowd of more than 250 hotel developers, contractors, investors, and civic leaders gathered 2 miles from SpaceX near Los Angeles to watch a crane hoist Marriott’s largest modular hotel into place. Visitors from all over the country flew to LAX to see the process and experience the future of hotel development.

The ‘stacking event’, hosted by Marriott, Guerdon, and developer Mogul Capital served as an educational seminar for hotel developers interested in speeding up the process and mitigating the pain points currently plaguing the construction industry.

“Just because we’ve been doing it the same way for 50 years doesn’t mean that’s the way we should build in the future,” explained Eric Jacobs, Chief Development Officer for Marriott International. “[Modular construction] is certainly the future of how we’re going to be developing buildings across the United States, Canada, and the world.”

Jennifer Lund, Marriott’s senior director for Global Design Strategies added, “Modular construction has become a trend in hospitality because of high demand and a lack of skilled labor.”

In the past 3 years, Marriott has embarked on an initiative to bring modular construction into the mainstream. Guerdon has participated in this initiative since its inception; building the first three modular Marriott hotels: Folsom Fairfield Inn & Suites, Pullman Washington Courtyard, & Oklahoma City AC Hotel. This hotel in Hawthorne, CA marks another first as Marriott’s largest modular project to date and first dual branded Marriott modular hotel.

When it is finished later this summer, the $86 million development will include a Marriott Courtyard with 221 rooms and an extended-stay TownePlace Suites with 133 rooms. It is estimated that modular construction shaved a full year off the projects timeline.

“It’s a lot of work upfront in the design phase, but when we look at construction, this is arguably one of the fastest construction projects going up in the U.S. right now,” said Brad Wagstaff, Owner and Managing Partner of Mogul Capital, the hotel’s developer.

News outlets covering the event included KTLA5’s Tech Reporter Rich DeMuro & Daily Breeze.
